Kept started from a simple feeling: I wanted my collection to feel like mine.

I love records, physical media, and the quiet weight they carry. Not just the music, but the object itself: where I found it, why I bought it, what was happening in my life when it came home with me, and why I kept it when everything else became easier to stream.

Discogs is an incredible market and database. But I kept feeling that something personal was missing. I didn't just want a list of releases. I wanted a home for the collection behind the data.

Kept is my attempt to build the kind of collection app I always wanted.

Not a marketplace-first tool. Not a social feed. Not a cold database. A private, visual home for people who care about what they collect.

I wanted something that made room for the parts that matter most: ownership, memory, notes, condition, location, value, duplicates, stories, and taste. I wanted a collection to feel less like inventory and more like a personal archive; something calm, beautiful, and alive.

Music can be digital. Ownership is not.

I built Kept because collecting has never felt purely functional to me.

A record is never just a record. It can be the album you searched for across cities, the one you bought after hearing it in the right room at the right time, the gift someone gave you that still carries their presence, or the copy you kept through every apartment because it says something about who you are.

Over time, I realized the collection itself tells a story. Not just of taste, but of memory, seasons of life, places, habits, friendships, obsessions, and change. That story deserved better than spreadsheets, marketplace screens, and clunky shelves of metadata.

Physical media stores more than content.

A stream gives you access. A record gives you presence. A CD, tape, book, or box set asks for space in your home and, in return, earns space in your memory. It gathers context around itself: the cover wear, the insert, the price sticker you forgot to remove, the shop you found it in, the person you were with, the shelf it lives on, the reason you reached for it again.

Digital is efficient. Physical is relational.

That difference matters to me. Because what we keep says something about what we value. A collection is not only an archive of media; it is an archive of attention.
